April 5, 2023, Tomb-Sweeping Day
Qingming was originally a solar term, usually around April 5th of the Gregorian calendar each year. At this time, the weather was clear and the scenery was clear, so the ancients called it Qingming.
Due to the close proximity of the Qingming Festival and the Cold Food Festival, people often combine the two. Gradually, the Qingming Festival absorbed the tradition of sacrificing ancestors from the Cold Food Festival, evolving from a farming solar term to a festival that respects the heavens and ancestors, and is cautious in pursuing the distant future.
In addition to tomb sweeping and ancestor worship, outings, swinging, flying kites, planting trees, folding willows, cuju, and even cockfighting are all traditional customs during the Qingming Festival.
